Ways To Develop The Skills Of Relative Pitch

July 8th, 2010 . by admin

The ability to recognize intervals between the tones in music is what is called relative pitch. This skill can prove to be very useful to musicians as they can readily identify and utilize the intervals between notes, and previous difficult tasks such as playing by ear, transcription, and even playing effectively in a group or singing could be easily handled by them. This is as important as doing Music Theory Worksheets on a regular basis. With the help of ear training programs, the skill of relative pitch could be developed by a number of methods but intensive listening is one central tenet to all exercises. Through listening the ears can be trained and a student can learn to gain an insight into the music by hearing the intervals.Until and unless intervals are not been distinguished from one another one should go on listening to these intervals. In order to bring the student’s attention to a given interval the instructors should simply play an interval on an available instrument or use familiar pieces of music.Solfege-based exercises is the another method developing relative pitch. The “fixed-do” solfege is used to make students learn to compare and identify specific pitches and the second method i.e. “movable-do” technique involves relating pitches and intervals to given musical contexts and Music Theory Books. The students may be encouraged by the instructors to reproduce single pitches or series of pitches, either on their instruments or by their voices. Students will get a feel for pitches and intervals in a variety of musical settings with the help of these exercises and they will get prepared to go on and play without restrictions. The ear training exercises in Music Education for developing relative pitch are generally not difficult, provided the students take the necessary time to attain and practice this. This skill won’t go away once they’ve got it, and the students can enjoy playing the music freely and comfortably.
