Learning Acoustic Guitar: Tips for the Beginner

Learning acoustic guitar can be fun and easy if you know what to expect and educate yourself on tips the professionals have known for years!
Time is a Factor
Learning acoustic guitar will include a few failures. Just because you can’t play your favorite rock or country songs on the first or second try does not mean you will never be able to play them. Even the world’s most popular performers started out in the same position as you. They had to work through music theory and instrument training to get to where they are now. No one is born with the knowledge to play, so if you ever want to be a skilled musician, start now. The sooner you begin learning acoustic guitar, the sooner you will be able to play just like a pro!
Practice, Practice, then Practice Some More
Practice is a vital part of learning acoustic guitar. If you are not willing to put in time each day to work on what you have learned, then you might not be ready for the task. Contrary to what you might have heard, a practice session does not have to last for hours. Instead, try practicing in short segments. Work on what you have learned and then give it a break so you can start again later refreshed.
The flip side to this is to practice frequently. You should never let days or weeks go between each practice or learning session. Even if you are learning on your own, you must make this a part of your daily routine. Otherwise, you risk forgetting what you have learned. When learning acoustic guitar, you will build on previous lessons so retention is very important.
Avoid Staring at your Fingers
Initially, you will not be familiar with the geography of the fret board and looking at your finger positions might be necessary. As you begin to work through each new song and lesson, avoid staring at your fingers. You should never remain fixated on your hands while playing. You should begin to rely on your hands and ears rather than your eyes to tell you if you are playing correctly.
Guitar Chords
A guitar chord requires the use of three strings. For new players, that can mean aching finger that become stiff. This problem will fade over time. Look at it like body building. You cannot expect your muscles to develop overnight. It takes days of stretching and pushing to get there. That usually means some pain in between. Learning acoustic guitar is much the same when it comes to chords. If you want to get through this process more quickly, add finger exercises to your daily schedule. Eventually you will be able to navigate the fret board with no problem.
Learning acoustic guitar can be fun and exciting however it will take time and effort. Do not expect to play complicated songs overnight. Instead, take it step by step and enjoy the process of learning. In time, your fingers will adjust and you will learn new techniques to further your skills and become the guitar player you always wanted to be!
