Acoustic Guitar Playing: Getting Started

March 14th, 2010 . by admin

Selecting Your GuitarWhile some folks think that any guitar will do, it is important to choose one that fits you, that is, you must be able to grasp the neck with little effort to reach the required chords. If the neck is too large for your hand, acoustic guitar playing could become very painful and cause carpel tunnel syndrome.

New Or Used?

It makes little difference if the guitar you choose is new or a hand-me-down. Fit is all that matters, though be sure to inspect any used instrument for cracks or obvious repairs which could have an impact on sound and action. If you can have an experienced acoustic guitar playing  friend accompany you, that will be a plus.

Tuning Your Guitar

Have your guitar tuned by a professional before you begin practicing, and it is a good idea to purchase an electronic tuner to use at home. These devices are simple to use and invaluable, as any musician knows the importance of true tone. If your guitar is out of tune, it will make learning very difficult and frustrating.

Practice Techniques

Choose a quiet room where there will be few distractions. Your environment is important to your success. If there are constant interruptions, it will be easy to become discouraged.

Choose a style of music that is suited to acoustic guitar playing, and songs that are not complicated to listen to. Listening is one major key to learning a song. If you are trying to learn a tune that requires heavy picking and chord changes right off the start, you are setting yourself up for a disappointment.

Start with simple strumming songs to learn the required chords first, then, as your playing improves move on to more challenging pieces. You will be able to judge how quickly you learn and the method of training that works best for your level of expertise.

Acoustic guitar playing can be a challenge, but once mastered it is a skill that will stay with you for life, and one that can be handed down to future generations. By starting off slow and learning at your own pace, success can be achieved.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Plan to practice at least 30 minutes per day or more, and stick with it. If you find yourself hitting a plateau, where you seem to be stuck, set it aside for a day or two and then come back to it refreshed. Or you may want to try a different style of music.
